F.A.Q.S
What Prerequisites Are Required To Begin This Course?
The Introduction To CAD is required. The math component is taught in the first few lessons. Algebra is not required for CAD, but an understanding of basic geometry would be a plus. I have taught students as young as 13 all the way up to the college level and I find that they achieve a better understanding of geometric shapes while learning drafting. The ‘geometry’ used in AutoCAD consists of shapes, angles, distance, radius, and area. Once you input your data the CAD system does the rest.
How Are The Classes Set Up?
I offer my classes through the Schoology website. It is a great platform for online schooling. All contact with students is conducted through Schoology and students can send a message if needed.
The classes work like this; as each lesson is uploaded to me I look at it and make note of any changes that need to be made. I send it back to the student with a note as to what corrections need to be made (if any) and they return it to me again when they are finished. We will do this back and forth as many times as needed until the concept has been understood. Each drawing will be perfect before they are allowed to move on to the next. It might seem strict but my students gain confidence by knowing that they did it right and can build on that knowledge in the next lesson.
When a student needs extra help I will make a personalized video to help them understand the next step. I am also available through e-mail and encourage parents to call me if they have any questions. This is one of the best things about my classes (in my opinion),
I am available to my students when they need me.

Does This Program Include Any Manual Drafting?
I teach drafting with AutoCAD for my online program, but I am a firm believer in learning manual drafting as well. There is a section in Module 3 where the student has a chance to do some manual drafting using basic drafting tools. This is mostly for the students’ own satisfaction in understanding what it takes to create precise drawings. But all the actual drawings in this class are created with AutoCAD.
What Will I Get Out Of This Class?
Upon completing each course you will receive a Certificate of Completion. Along with your portfolio and a letter of recommendation from me you will be prepared to look for a job or to continue your studies at college. Your portfolio is your most important proof that you have mastered the AutoCAD software and that you can produce precise, detailed drawings. These drawings can then be used to produce almost anything; tools, parts, house plans, schematics…the list is endless.
How Old Do I Need To Be To Enroll In Online Drafting?
This program is geared towards students who are at least 13 and up; I have taught middle school, high school and some college level classes. A general understanding of geometric shapes is useful. The first class begins with the basics and goes from there.
How Long Does It Take To Complete Each Class?
Each class is divided into 10 modules. These classes are designed so that you can work at your own pace. It does not matter how long it takes you to complete each module as long as regular progress is being made. Since these classes are self paced, it totally depends on the individual student as to how long it takes to complete.
- Introduction is equivalent to 1/2 credit.
- Courses 1, 2, 3, & 4 are 1 credit each.
What Is The AutoCAD Certification Test?
Each year my students take the CAD Certification test. I currently teach 9-12 at a magnet school. The exam does not consist of the student producing drawings but is more of a multiple choice test regarding functions and methods of the AutoCAD system. To prepare for the exam the student will need to truly understand the functions and commands that are used. I can certainly help with this but it will require extra effort on the part of the student. The actual test would be taken at a local testing center where you live. A list of exam centers can be found online.
